If you own a motorcycle, then you should also own boots. Roughly 80% of all motorcycle accidents involve the rider's leg. By sporting motorcycle boots when you go riding, you have the ability to make both a fashion statement, as well as a safety statement. Of course, the function of the motorcycle boot is the most significant aspect, as it could literally become a lifesaver. However keeping your boots dry also improves the appearance of the footwear, and prolongs their lifespans. Here are some tips for caring for your Harley Davidson boots:
1. Dry your boots properly
Your boots can become wet through various ways, such as rain, stepping in deep water, wet grass, etc. Make sure that you dry your boots immediately, and not through means such as a hairdryer. Such methods could cause the leather to become stiff and to contract. In fact, make sure to provide much air circulation and minimum heat or no heat, when drying your boots.
2. Waterproof your boots
You might assume that motorcycle boots have already been pre-waterproofed. It is indeed true that particular boots designed for motorcyclists contain waterproofed liners. In other cases, the manufacturer of the boots has factory-treated the boots. However, even these boots will require waterproofing upkeep. A word of warning: before choosing a certain method for waterproofing your boots, be certain that it does not clash with the factory treatment.
Prior to waterproofing your boots, verify that they are first dry and clean. Use a damp cloth to remove tiny dirt particles, and a wet brush to remove heavy-duty dirt and grime. Some basic waterproofing materials include:
Beeswax
Lanolin
mineral oil
petroleum jelly
pitch and pine tar
silicone oil
These various materials fill up the fibers and pores of the leather, so water cannot penetrate them. The disadvantage of the majority of these treatments is that you must apply them frequently. That is because they become liquids in room temperatures.
3. Consider waxes with solvents for more permanent waterproofing
Why is this an effective blend? The solvent helps to prevent the wax from becoming a liquid, thus allow it to remain in the grains and pores of the boot.
4. Remove factory-waterproofing treatment before applying wax to chrome/oil-tanned leather
Removing the factory waterproofing treatment will allow the boot to retain the wax better. To remove the manufacturer's waterproofing, use a soft brush with a mild dishwashing liquid soap or a residue-free type of detergent. Afterwards, let the boots dry totally and then apply your own waterproofing (i.e. beeswax)
5. Use beeswax products for uses other than waterproofing
While beeswax products are effective in waterproofing motorcycle boots, you can also use them for general protection of leather. That includes rough, sanded, recycled, suede, and split leather. However, keep in mind that your boots will look (and smell) different.
Waterproof boots are vital whenever we hit the road with our motorcycles. Use these basic waterproofing guidelines to keep the water out, and the comfort in.
